March Newsletter – Is British Steel Back and What It Means for Your Next Project

The future of UK Steel
There’s been a lot of noise recently, around the future of UK steel and for good reason, following the governments announcement of it’s steel strategy on 19th March and measures due to come into force 1 July! This brings fresh government backing, reduced import quotas, increased tariffs and talk of strengthening domestic supply chains, it’s starting to feel like British steel might be staging a comeback.
But what does that actually mean for your next fabrication project?
A significant proportion of imported material may fall outside quota limits and become subject to tariffs of 50%
Import volumes are likely to reduce tightening availability significantly
Greater reliance will be placed on UK mills
Pricing is expected to rise
Lead times may extend as supply chains adjust
Our perspective
At Yates Engineering, we cautiously see this as a positive shift for the long term. Stronger domestic supply chains have the potential to improve quality, reduce risk and give customers greater confidence in delivery. But it also reinforces something that’s always mattered: Choosing the right fabrication partner isn’t just about price – it’s about quality communication, quality materials and quality work.
A quick question
Are you seeing more pressure to source locally or reduce project risk?
We’d be interested to hear what you’re experiencing.
