Steel fabrication projects: December 2015

  • bin lorry steel fabrication
  • steel fabrication for bridge repair
  • steel fabrication of loading hopper

Here is a round-up of this month’s steel fabrication projects, including a loading hopper, bin lorry repairs and bridge stays.

Steel fabrication to modify a bean hopper

We have been on site this week installing and commissioning this bespoke material handling equipment. The customer has a contract exporting beans to Egypt and wanted a means of loading them into steel containers. By working closely together we were able to create an efficient and usable solution to this problem.  The project started with a standard grain elevator that was bought in by the customer.

We then carried out repairs and alteration to make it fit for purpose, we removed the existing hydraulic ram and replaced it with a new modified version, we added safety mesh guards to protect the operator from the conveyor and also fabricated a hydraulic flicker on the end of the belt to evenly spread the beans into the containers.  Also as part of this project we designed and fabricated a steel material hopper to feed the belt and also a weighted frame to mount the elevator and hopper to.

Bin lorry repairs

This bin lorry has been in this week for us to carry out repairs to the side access ladder.  Due to the height of the wagon and the sites it visits, it is prone to damage. We took this on board when repairing and rebuilding the ladder using heavier gauge steel box section with solid runs. When carrying out repairs we like to listen to the customer and if we can improve the situation and prevent the same issue happening again we will.

Bridge stays

These stays have been fabricated to fit an existing bridge in the Newark and Sherwood district. Our customer S P Rose Ltd is a county council approved contractor and carries out groundworks, repairs and maintenance on footpaths and bridges. They had been called out to repair the timer on this bridge, but after closer inspection realised that the steelwork needed attention as well. By using our in house CAD facilities we drew and fabricated bolt-on diagonal stays and brackets to fit the bridge.  S P Rose then fitted these on site and completed the bridge overhaul.
